Using the Adaptec 2400A IDE RAID Card in RedHat Linux 7.2

The driver available on the Adaptec CD and Adaptec website works for RedHat 7.1 and lower. RedHat 7.3 does not require a driver for this card since the proper code will be embedded in the kernel. However, RedHat 7.2 requires an updated driver.

You must create an update disk for init and a dpt driver disk. Download the following disk images:

dptdriver-7.2-i686.img (DPT Driver)

updates-initrd.img (INIT Update)

In Windows, use rawrite to create the floppies from these two disk images. Make sure the two floppies are formatted. In Linux, you can use dd. Insert floppy into Linux box and type:

dd if=dptdriver-7.2-i686.img of=/dev/fd0
dd if=updates-initrd.img of=/dev/fd0

Once the two floppies are created boot with the RedHat 7.2 Install CD. At the LILO prompt type:

linux dd noprobe updates

From there you will be prompted to insert the DPT driver disk (dptdriver-7.2-i686.img). You then select Add Device and select Adaptec I20 Controller from the list provided. You will then be prompted for the update disk (updates-initrd.img). After that, you will go into the installer and proceed normally.

Without the above actions, on reboot you would get a kernal panic. But after using the dpt driver disk and update disk, these problems will not arise.
